We are spoilt for choice for restaurants and bars, catering for all tastes and budgets. Pembrokeshire Fish Week in June, and Narberth Food Festival in September are the highlights of the local culinary calendar.
Restaurants and Takeaway
Here are a few of our personal recommendations – some of the real gems of our two counties!
Our local pub, and childhood home of Wales an British and Irish Lions rugby star Jonathan ‘Fox’ Davies, the Fox and Hounds Inn offer good pub fare, and have a locals bar with pool table. They often host lively receptions for local events such as the Village Carnival, turning on the Christmas Lights and Fireworks Night.
The Pirate Restaurant and Café, and the Smugglers Grill on the seafront at Amroth offer very reasonably priced pub-style food and generous portions, ice cream and coffee, and are run by friendly hosts Nicola and Ed.
Diablos is a little more pricey and upmarket, but well worth it. They have restaurants in Carmarthen and Narberth, and have just opened Diablos On The Quay, serving gastro pub fare. Diablos restaurants are a special place to eat, and each dish is a taste sensation. The starters are to die for, and dishes like wild pigeon, duck breast and ox cheek are all served in creative and tasty ways for main course. They also offer a cosmopolitan cocktail menu.
The attractive Plum and Vanilla Café, in Narberth, has great food with an organic emphasis.
On the rugged sea-front at Freshwater West, the Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company serve freshly-foraged seafood out of their street food cart in the car park. Featured in Chef James Martin’s ‘Food Map of Britain’ on the BBC, it is local seafood and culinary passion at its finest.
El Aichi, an Indian restaurant in St Clears, only a few miles from here, has friendly staff, and Indian food as good as any we have tasted in the UK. The fish and chip shop in St. Clears is the best in the area.
Self Catering
There are a few options in the area for picking up food and drink provisions. The Village Shop and Post Office in Bancyfelin stocks the essential and basic items. There is a Spar mini-supermarket in St. Clears, or Carmarthen boasts two of the bigger supermarkets, Tesco Extra and Morrisons.
There are a host of choices for those who want to go local. There are good butcher shops in St. Clears, Narberth and Carmarthen, as well as greengrocers and farmers markets. Wrights Independent Food Emporium in Nantgaredig, is a farm shop and café, offering refillable wine, homemade breads and baked goods, and a great stock of local produce.
And of course we grow organic food here – talk to us if you want to try our free-range eggs, goats milk, meat, vegetables or preserves, subject to season and availability. We are always happy to pass on our experiences of eateries and bars in the area.
